- What is the source of funding for the IDOT/DTS grants program?
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration provides most of the funding for the grants program. Matching funds are provided by state appropriated funds and in some cases by local matching funds.
- What Traffic Safety issues receive IDOT funding?
Primarily those related to highway safety issues: safety belt use, impaired driving, child passenger safety, etc.

- When can you apply for grants for the upcoming fiscal year?
Applications will be available November 30, 2009 for the Federal Fiscal Year 2011 (FFY 2011).
- How does IDOT/DTS advertise they are accepting applications for the upcoming fiscal year?
A postcard is sent to every police agency in the state of Illinois which includes the IDOT website and the dates applications will be accepted. Grant managers for IDOT/DTS notify current grantees with the same information.
- What is the due date for submitting the FFY 2011 grant application?
February 1, 2010

- What types of grant applications can be accepted year-round?
If there are funds available, Injury Prevention, MCR-P and MCR-XML grants will be considered at any time. Also, based on funding, other programs may be eligible to apply for a grant at other times during the year.
- What forms are used to apply for a grant?
Each grant program has a specific application form. These forms are available on the website along with the program specifications.
- How does IDOT/DTS choose what applications are approved ?
After the application is reviewed by a grant manager familiar with the specific program, the grant is then reviewed by the assigned program manager. The Highway Safety Plan Committee evaluates recommendations from both the grant and the program manager. After a thorough review, the chosen grants are compiled in the highway safety plan. This document must be approved by the Governor's Highway Safety Representative.
- What expenditures are allowed when applying for a grant?
Each grant program has different expenditures eligible for reimbursement. Guidelines and specifications are included with each application.
- What are the specific dates for the FFY 2011 grant period?
FFY 2011 begins October 1, 2010 and concludes September 30, 2011.
- When will IDOT/DTS announce their decision on approved grants?
Our goal is to announce the awards the end of August.
